Analysis.
This painting was made by palmer hayden. He was an African-American that depicted life as an African -American in his paintings. In this painting, “We four in Paris”, we can see four people playing in a table poker and two playing pool at the back. We can also see that one of the African-American has a glass of wine, and in 1920s when the Harlem renaissance, alcohol was prohibited to control the consume of alcohol in United States. One of the things that calls my attention a lot about this picture is that all four men are deflecting their gaze away trying to avoid seeing the cards or maybe they are watching to the sides to see if some white cops see them drinking wine and playing poker so they can escape, they want to avoid problems. The tone of this painting is very serious and neutral. We cannot feel stress, happiness nor sadness in this painting. I like the technique Palmer Hayden used in this picture, its not common because he is using watercolor and most of the artists don't use this technique. All the Analysis of paintings and poems are connected because all of these were made during the same time period and with the same purpose... show bright and dark parts about the life of an African American. Show how much they suffered to achieve goals like liberty and stopping racism little by little. To show that they can be good poets and painters. To show that the black race is capable of doing things that white can do and that they are humans too.
