Fire!! By: Wallace Thurman."Forward to Fire!!"
FIRE... flaming, burning, searing, and penetrating Far beneath the superficial items of\ The flesh to boil the sluggish blood... FIRE... weaving vivid, hot designs upon an ebon Bordered loom and satisfying pagan Thirst for beauty unadorned... and Flesh is sweet and real...the soul An inward flush - on fire in the furnace of life blazing. ..."Fy-ah, Fy-ah, Lawd, Fy-ah gonna burn ma soul!" |
Analysis
Wallace Thurman was one of the most important writers of the harlem renaissance that happened during World War I and middle 1930s. The harlem renaissance was a period where a big explosion of culture and art of the African-american placed in Harlem, New York. In this text I will be analyzing Wallace Thurman’s poem “fire!!”. The poem “Fire!!” by Wallace Thurman is about African-american people being mistreated. In “Fire!!”, we see white people are represented as the fire, and the African-american the things that the fire is burning. This poem says that even if the white men may try to put down, and destroy the African-american, they will never be able to. “Fy-ah, Fy-ah, Lawd, Fy-ah gonna burn ma soul!”, by this he meant that fire can hurt people very badly, but eventually it can be put out and the things it was burning will begin to heal.
Wallace Thurman uses very good imagery in this poem. “The flesh to boil the sluggish blood...”, this helps us imagine how much pain and suffering the African Americans were forced to endure like we see in this and other poems. They speak out about what they believe and express their opinion through their work during the Harlem Renaissance. The tone is demanding, vivid but not happy, and there are no shifts. All the Analysis of paintings and poems are connected because all of these were made during the same time period and with the same purpose... show bright and dark parts about the life of an African American. Show how much they suffered to achieve goals like liberty and stopping racism little by little. To show that they can be good poets and painters. To show that the black race is capable of doing things that white can do and that they are humans too.
